I reread Magic's Pawn (the first book of The Last Herald Mage Trilogy) by Mercedes Lackey every couple of years. I like almost all of Mercedes Lackey's books, but this is her best work. I first read this book in time I read it. Mercedes Lackey, Last Herald Mage Trilogy (Magic's Pawn, Magic's Promise, Magic's Price). Magic's Pawn is one of the books that launched my life-long love of the Fantasy genre. Note that saying 1) A likeable hero or heroine (in this case, Herald-trainee Mags). Those books are Arrows of the Queen, .. There's an old series called Magic's Pawn, Magic's Promise, and Magic's Price by Mercedes Lackey (her books in general are pretty gay-friendly, and there's a gay lady couple in one of her other early series, set in the same world. 2) The likeable hero MAGIC'S PAWN, MAGIC'S PROMISE, MAGIC'S PRICE — this is the “Last Herald-Mage” trilogy, and it stars Vanyel Ashkevron, who is gay.
